Well after the terrible her is my list of the top five meals I have had this year.... So here goes:
1. Lucali's in Brooklyn, New York. Full review here. The best pizza I have ever had in one of the most romantic settings I have ever eaten for meagre amounts of money. And to cap it off, it is bring your own.
2. Momofuku Ko in Manhattan, New York. Full review here. Korean fusioned genius. Seventeen courses of food you haven't eaten before in ways you hadn't thought of. The only problem is getting a reservation. Beaten by Lucali's as you have to factor in the price of a meal and this wasn't cheap.
3. Fernandez & Leluu's supper club in London Fields. Full reviews here and here. They take all the nonsense and press chatter about supper clubs/ underground restaurants/ the heritage of Cuban illegal backroom dinners and turn it into a food reality.
4. The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell. Review above or here. Quite frankly the best brunch I have had. Time in, time out. Consistency is a quality to be admired and when it is combined with food such as this it has to be thanked.
5. Antepliler Restaurant in the middle of nowhere Green Lanes and Yildiz on Blackstock Road. This is slightly cheating by combining two Turkish restaurants. Yildiz is not the best Turkish restaurant but it has one standout dish - lamb ribs. If you get this you will be sated and joyous (the rest will leave you slightly cold). But for the rest, Antepliler Restaurant. It is a wonder of a place. Proper lahmacun and a dish in which they cook tomatoes on an open grill and then blend those tomatoes (with embedded charcol) to slow cook meat in. Reviews of both to follow in the new year.
Cheap eats of the year... Pilpel in Spitalfields. Review here.
Honourable mentions.... Rochelle Canteen, like St John but delivers more and with a beautiful courtyard on an English summers day.
Ok time to prepare for New Years and book for brunch to recover at the Modern Pantry.
